The Tale of Seven Sisters Road
Locals of Nebraska City have been telling the tale of Seven Sisters Road for a hundred years or longer. Reports of paranormal activity have echoed through the decades from this small stretch three miles or so outside of Nebraska City.
Long ago, back in the early days of settlers beginning to farm the prairie, and the railroad building its way across the country, there was a family that had two parents, a son, and seven daughters. The family owned a farm that had seven hills with trees on each hill. One can imagine that being the only boy in a family with seven girls wasn’t the easiest thing to manage. This was before indoor plumbing, before multiple bathrooms, and most likely not a very large living space. Put a young man with some major anger issues into this and it was only a matter of time before the volatile ingredients would explode into a tragedy.
One day, the son had a tremendous argument with his parents. Enraged, he fled the home and hid in the woods surrounding the area, maybe he even traveled all seven hills on the property and that’s how his idea for revenge on his family was born. Darkness fell and the young man began winding his way back home. As he neared the house, he noticed his parents leaving. Fate was weighting the cards in his favor.
He entered the house. It’s not known if his sisters were all already asleep or if some were and some weren’t or they were all awake.
One by one, he lured, or dragged, tempted or tormented each sister out into the woods around the home and up onto one of the seven hills, a different hill for each sister. For each sister, as he had no favorites this night, he threw a noose around her neck and hung her from a tree. Each hill now had a sister dangling from a tree, neck snapped and swaying in the wind. The son had created a macabre “welcome home” to his parents upon their return.
While each sister’s body hung from a different tree on a different hill, their spirits fled to hide amongst the trees, now irrevocably entwined to the hills for generations to come.
Ever since, travelers along the path which then became a road have experienced glimpses of the sisters and their white gowns. They’ve been tormented by the screams of the sisters. In more modern times, police reports detail people reporting seeing glowing red eyes and a monster. Cars stop working for long minutes along the stretch of Seven Sisters Road. Macabre music will randomly play from their radio, or their radio stops playing. Headlights dim and then come back as soon as the stretch of road is passed. Events have been whispered about and stories told about this stretch for at least a century… Actual police reports, all from one week, exist from the 1960’s. Do the sisters haunt the road to this day? Does Nebraska City have its own cryptid running the land?
