Q: I am a practicing witch and most of my beliefs are very eclectic with a slight leaning toward Wiccan. I mostly work with the Norse gods but lately I have felt drawn to working with angels but I’m not sure why or how to do even really do this. Can I work with them in my usual spells or are there any specific spells you can suggest to get me started?
A: I have gotten quite a few questions recently on working with angels and archangels, so I can assure you that yes, you absolutely can work with the angels in addition to your current pantheon of gods and spirits.
Depending on the source, tradition, and author, you can find information about hundreds and hundreds of angels, and like with any pantheon of spirits, it can get rather complicated. If you are just beginning, I do suggest looking at the archangels first as their lore tends to be rather consistent and you can find the most information on them.
As mentioned in a previous Ask Alex Q&A post, angels tend to play well with all other deities and will come to the aid of anyone who calls to them, the archangels especially.
As you should do when learning about any other gods or spirits, I suggest doing your research to learn as much as you can about each archangel.
Just like other pantheons, each angel and archangel has an area that they are most adept at or assigned to aiding in. The archangels tend to be more powerful in interceding in most any circumstance, but even they have their specialties!
Archangel Michael, or St. Michael, is probably the most commonly known archangel to be invoked and recognized. (The archangels are often referred to as saints in many cultures and spiritual traditions.) As you learn more about them, you may find yourself drawn to a particular archangel. My suggestion is to trust that feeling and see where it leads you!
You may call upon the archangels as you would when calling the quarters (each archangel also has a cardinal direction and element) or when invoking any deities during ritual, or you can find a large selection of spells and workings designed specifically to work with them alone.
A working that I was taught calls upon the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and is a very good all-purpose spell that can be used for nearly any situation and also allows you to get to know them a little better. I’ve seen this referred to as a Three Day Wishing Spell or Archangel Wishing Spell, of which I prefer to call it the latter.
Archangel Wishing Spell
Items needed:
- 9 white tea light candles
- 1 small baking pan or fireproof, heat-resistant dish
- sugar
- 3 wishes: one for prosperity/business, one for love, and one “impossible” wish (I suggest writing them down and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!)
Place the sugar in the pan or dish and spread it around to make a somewhat flat, even layer along the bottom.
Arrange 3 of the tea light candles in the dish on top of the sugar.
Ask for the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael to hear your words and to join you in your working.
State each wish as you light the candles one by one. Then say:
Almighty Divine Spirit, you have given us archangels to assist us during our time on Earth.
St. Michael is our Protector. I ask him to come to my aid, fight for all my loved ones, and protect us from danger.
St. Gabriel is the Messenger. I ask him to help me to clearly hear your voice and to teach me the truth.
St. Raphael is the Healer. I ask him to take my need for healing and that of everyone I know, lift it up to your throne of grace, and deliver back to us the gift of recovery.
Help us to fully realize the reality of the archangels and their desire to serve us. Holy Angels pray for us. Amen.
Set the dish with the candles on the highest place in your home where they can safely burn to completion. Tops of shelves or refrigerators are a good starting place, but be very careful of anything above the candles or being too close to the ceiling and never leave them unattended. SAFETY FIRST!
Repeat this spell for three days. On the third day, share this spell either by sending to a friend or posting in a public forum (social media, message boards, etc.) to help share the good works of the archangels.
After the candles have finished burning on the third day, take the leftover tea light cups and sugar to a church or other sacred place. Pour the sugar on the ground while giving thanks and dispose of the tea light cups in a waste receptacle somewhere on the grounds.
On the fourth day, watch for any signs or omens.
